Vancouver Home and Design Show 2013 Takes Place This Weekend!

Jonathan and Drew Scott

Jonathan and Drew Scott provide some star power to the Home + Design Show

If the names Jonathan and Drew Scott mean anything to you, chances are you already have a ticket to the Vancouver Home + Design show that starts today. If you’re not familiar with the brothers who front TV shows Buying and Selling and Property Brothers, fear not, you’ve got until Sunday to get down to BC Place to meet the real estate gurus and pick the brains of some 325 other home design and living experts to help spice up your Vancouver rental or investment properties.

The words “home” and “design” hardly send some people into a frenzy. So think about these instead: antique shopping advice, eco-homes, live design challenges, free consultations, design trends for fall 2013, live cooking demos, staging for reselling, celebrity designers, interactive booths and something called “date night design”. It’s a smorgasbord of everything you could possibly want to know about how to improve your home. And given 55% of BC homeowners are planning to renovate over the next 12 months, it’s not a far stretch to believe the organizers when they say over 35,000 people are expected to attend this year’s show.

Regardless of your home-owning situation, goals and dreams, the Home + Design show is bound to get you thinking. Take for example, the CasaBubble exhibit by French designer Pierre Stephane. CasaBubble is the hot new thing overseas. It’s essentially an oversized transparent bubble that provides temporary outdoor space. There’s something a little Space Odyssey about them that makes us think they won’t be snapped up en mass by Vancouverites this weekend. But it’s something to think about, isn’t it? That need to escape the urban densification. That need for a space free of brick wall barriers that allows us to get closer to nature. In a increasingly fast-paced, gadget-driven world, it’s hardly surprising designers are looking at new technologies to regain that sense of life balance.

Judging from the line up of events, it’s highly unlikely you’ll leave without a few DIY tips up your sleeve for your own condo or rental property. Just from browsing the website you learn that mirrors are a great way of making a space not only seem bigger, but brighter too because they’re an extra source of reflective light. And given the winter gloom is on the horizon, a lighter, more homely apartment doesn’t seem like such a bad idea.

The Vancouver Home + Design takes place on Thursday 17 Oct – Sunday 20 October at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver. Visit vancouverhomeanddesignshow.com for tickets and more information.
