Strathcona: Vancouver’s Next Top Neighborhood?
Yaletown and Gastown are already well frequented by Vancouver’s fashionable set. But now people are looking elsewhere for the next top neighborhood, and it’s Strathcona that’s getting people talking. Strathcona is located near downtown, barely a 10 minute drive or commute to the inner city. One of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, it has long been attracting modest house prices. Its affordability and more recent gradual gentrification has been noticed by savvy home owners and renters and now Strathcona is being touted as an area of opportunity.
Strathcona is bordered by Chinatown on the west and Clark Drive on the east. It stretches from the Burrard Inlet waterfront down to Malkin Street.
The neighborhood is characterized largely by its eclectic mix of housing. It has the city’s highest concentrations of 19th Century and early 20th Century buildings, many of which are being restored for modern living. And amongst the heritage homes are the family-friendly “Vancouver Special” houses of the 1970s and 80s, plus newer low and high rise apartments.
It’s an ideal spot for both young professionals wanting to take advantage of the cheaper rental prices. Young families too, are being attracted by the affordable rent and in addition, to Strathcona’s strong community spirit. That spirit is evident in projects like the 1.35ha community garden, the active residents’ association and the pride in which the highly successful Eastside Culture Crawl is rolled out every year.
Strathcona isn’t without its problems, but it is on the verge of change. And it certainly has the foundations of being the great neighborhood people are talking about. Funky cafes like Finch’s Market are starting to pop up. The hipster set are planting a stake, and specialist stores like La Casa Gelato are drawing visitors to the area. There is a collection of elementary schools, five parks, recreational facilities for various sports and great public transport services.
