Surrey is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada and in the Lower Mainland.
Its residents are made up of a melting pot of ethnicities, and several festivals take place over the year, such as the Fusion Festival. The city hosts two major post-secondary institutions, Simon Fraser University and Kwantlen Polytechnic University, making higher education a main economic driving force. Agriculture is also a strong component of Surrey’s economy, with nearly a third of Surrey’s land utilized for local food production. Surrey is affected by urban sprawl – the expansion of residential areas that moves away from urban density – which has created heavy traffic in and out of the area, but has been addressed with the development of the Port Mann bridge and expansion of highways.
